Week 2 – Online Learning Day 1 – 6th Grade Math

Welcome back! I hope you had an amazing weekend! Last week was pretty wild having to work from home while also having to make sure my own kids got their work done! We made it through – and if you’re reading this, so did you! That’s an accomplishment! Here’s a quote that summarizes what I’ve been thinking about lately:

This time is definitely difficult, but….the only thing we can do is allow it to make us better and stronger! We’ve got this!

Now onto learning! This week, we will be working on a new concept…finding the area of triangles. Here are the things that you need to do in order to be successful today.

Standard:

MGSE6.G.1:  Find area of right triangles, other triangles, special quadrilaterals, and polygons by composing into rectangles or decomposing into triangles and other shapes; apply these techniques in the context of solving real-world and mathematical problems

  • Find the area of a polygon (regular or irregular) by dividing it into squares, rectangles, and/or triangles and find the sum of the areas of those shapes

The following tasks are for:

Monday, March 23rd – Periods 1, 2, and 3

Tuesday, Mach 24th – Periods 4 and 5

Today you will log back into Seesaw. You will see the following assignments available for you to view or work on.

1. Watch the short video in the announcements (inbox)!

2. Watch the video titled “How to Find the Area of a Triangle”.

3. Work your way through the Study Jams tutorial.

4. Lastly, watch the Flocabulary assigned to you. You’ll have to go to the link and put in the class code that will be provided to you in Seesaw. There is a video and a vocab cards activity. Please work through both of these.

Reach out to me or Mrs. Seibert should you need any help! Remember, my office hours are from 9:45 a.m. until 2:45 p.m. each day. Email me at zandre.jean@cobbk12.org or call Mrs. Seibert at 678-842-6917 ext. 027. We’re here to help!

Important Message from Cobb-Douglas Health

Hi there! We’ve made it almost a whole week with Distance Learning! I hope that you’re getting the hang of things, but that you’re also taking care of yourselves and your family. Please stay healthy and practice social distancing as much as possible. Speaking of social distancing, please read the update teachers were asked to share on their blogs below. In addition, Mrs. Seibert has a message below as well! Be safe, stay healthy, and keep on learning! Check back on Monday for some area of triangles work!

Please help remind students that while schools are closed, they need to be social distancing (that includes play dates…) and with the amount of cases we have in the area, everyone should be self-monitoring for symptoms. Please share this link with your class:  https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/and https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/prepare/index.html.

Mrs. Seibert’s Friday Message for the Class of 2026!

Online Learning Day 3 – 6th Grade Math (Introduction to Seesaw)

The following assignments are for:

Thursday – March 19th (Periods 1 and 2)

Friday – March 20th (Periods 3, 4, and 5)

As we try to figure out this online learning, I am trying to figure out ways in which I can make math more engaging from where I am. So…I am introducing a new platform that my help students a little more. We’ll be using Seesaw.

In Seesaw, students can post to their journal, respond to activities (with words, videos, by sending a picture of their work, or typing into the platform), and view class announcements! Students do not see the work of any other student in the class. Please follow these steps today to get used to using the platform.

Step 1: Send Mrs. Jean and email to get your personal log in. Make sure the student’s first and last name are on the email, please. Her email address is zandre.jean@cobbk12.org.

Step 2: Sign up using the directions emailed back to you with the access code given you. I should get back to you within 5 minutes. Sign up will work on a computer or a mobile device (if using the app).

Step 3 : Complete the two assignments in Seesaw. I promise they’re easy. They’re to help you get used to using it. Make sure to show it to an adult (if possible), send me a message to say hello, and explore some.

Let me know if you need any help! Next week we work on area of triangles! Yesssssss!!!!!

Online Day 2 – 6th Grade Math

The following assignments are for:

Tuesday 3/17 (Periods 1)

Wednesday 3/18 (Periods 2, 3, and 4)

Thursday 3/19 (Period 5)

Standard: MGSE6.EE.9 Students should be able to use variables to represent two quantities; write an equation to express one quantity, thought of as the dependent variable, in terms of the other quantity, thought of as the independent variable, and analyze the relationship between the dependent and independent variables using graphs and tables, and relate these to the equation.

Before your start: You should have practiced dependent and independent variables the last time you “came to class”. Please make sure you understand this before moving on to this lesson. Today you will watch a video about linear functions (with x and y variables) and how to graph them and represent them in function tables. Today you will be learning about direct variation (how x and y change together). and the constant of proportionality (k). This is related to dependent and independent variables, so pay close attention. We’ll work on this for the rest of the week to make sure you’ve got it!

Step 1: Watch the video on Linear Relationship (graphing in a line) below. Please make sure to watch the video and have a sheet of paper ready. You’ll need to try problems with the video.

Step 2: Study the direct variation notes until you understand them. They are linked above.

Step 3: Try the two of the Quizizz games below.

Review from 5th Grade Function Tables
